I WAS A COWARD. I SHOULD have talked to my parents the next day. After all, it was Sunday. Go to church, eat a nice meal, have it out with my mom and dad. You know, normal Sunday afternoon activities. Well, I made it to church, but I went to the early service, the one my family didn’t go to. Thirty seconds after the end of the closing prayer, I ended up confessing the whole sordid story to Devotion and Chris. My best friend had an instinct when it came to something going wrong in my life.

Dev was constantly kept busy.

She huffed and looked ready to commit murder throughout my ordeal with Brad. Chris looked torn between sympathy for me and worry at Devotion’s fierce expression.

“I can’t believe you let them do this to you,” she said.

“What do you mean? I haven’t had much choice in all this. You know the rules.”

“You always have a choice, Emma. Always.” She raised a hand at my mouth opening to protest. “There is always a way to get what you want, and let your parents think they’ve won, too. But with your father, and what’s gone down so far, you’ll have to do a straight confrontation. No pussyfooting around. Got it?”

I nodded, while practicing in giving her what she wanted, but I did what I wanted. Kind of.

I begged off from brunch with them, since my stomach was still paying for my over indulgence the previous night. I settled for ham and rolls, and read a book. Then I watched a movie. Then another. When I decided I really should try to get in touch with them, it was almost six. I couldn’t interrupt their dinner, now could I?

When the phone rang at the end of my reasoning, I panicked. I wasn’t ready for this. I wasn’t ready to tell my dad off. I could feel myself shaking, could feel the perspiration on my forehead. Then I checked the caller I.D. It was my other favorite tormentor.

“Hi, Dev. What’s up?”

“You didn’t talk to your parents yet, did you?”

“Uh...no.”

“I knew it.”

“Dev...” I was whining, but I didn’t care.

Apparently Devotion cared. “Emma, give me a break! I know you think I’m being bossy, but you do this to yourself!” Her tone softened. “Honey, we’ve been best friends forever. We know each other better than anyone else does. So you know I’m only after you for your own good, right?”

“Yeah. I know.” I rolled my eyes. I wouldn’t have dared to do that if she’d been in the room with me.

“Did you just roll your eyes at me?”

“Yes!”

“See? I know you too well. Okay, it’s up to you if you want to have it out with your dad. It’s your life, and even if you do screw it deep into the ground, it’s still your life. If you want to be miserable the rest of your existence, and as a vampire, it’s a long one, well, that’s your choice. I can do this all day, you know.
